Controlling HVAC Noise Across Multiple Levels

Some HVAC&R systems require specialised acoustic solutions—particularly when they are located close to residential areas.

At this shopping centre, noise attenuation was a priority to prevent mechanical and airborne noise from the HVAC&R equipment from affecting nearby residents. At the same time, the equipment needed sufficient ventilation and easy access for servicing.

To maintain airflow, the HVAC platform was raised further above the roof surface. This design provided generous space around the equipment and convenient access for service crews.

However, raising the platform created another acoustic challenge. Noise could escape through the mesh deck and travel outwards across the roof.

Our practical solution was a two-level noise attenuation system featuring external Acoustic+ Wall© panels.

The upper level of Acoustic+ Wall© captures noise travelling directly from the HVAC&R equipment. Its acoustic core absorbs the sound energy and converts it into heat, which then dissipates naturally.

Any noise that escapes downwards through the platform’s mesh deck is captured by a second, lower level of Acoustic+ Wall©.

This double-decker configuration provides targeted noise attenuation at multiple levels while maintaining the airflow, equipment access and ventilation required for the HVAC&R system.

The result is a practical solution that protects neighbouring residents without compromising the performance or accessibility of the rooftop equipment.
